The Pittsburgh Penguins have been rough to start the season, but they are patient and know they cane be better.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have started their season with a 2-3-0 record and while that doesn’t sound terrible on the surface, it’s well below where they wanted to be.

Through the first two weeks of the season, the Penguins have already seen varied results and will be playing from behind in the early stages of the season.

While the group is working towards improving and finding a positive change, they are also remaining calm and making sure not to hit the panic button.

The Penguins know they are a better team than what they’ve shown and better performances will come so long as they play smart and level headed.

“There’s going to be a lot of ebbs and flows especially early on here,” Bryan Rust said. “The sooner we can get a little bit more consistency, I think the better we’ll be.”

Through the first five games, the Penguins have seen minimal lineup changes, as well; the most maneuvering that has taken place is P.O. Joseph being healthy scratched for Ryan Shea and Jansen Harkins being waived to the AHL.

Radim Zohorna took Harkins’ spot in the lineup and he has already provided a positive push to the depth.

In his season debut, Zohorna picked up the bottom six’s first goal of the year, but he is hoping there is still more to come.

“It wasn’t bad,” Zohorna said about his tally. “But I think we can still be better.”

Head coach Mike Sullivan preached patience with his lineup and believes the team is capable of so much more than they’ve offered so far.

Sullivan is leading by example and not jumping to any rash decisions when it comes to the lineup; Shea and Zohorna have been the only changes since opening night puck drop.

“We have conversations as a staff on whether we stay patient with certain combinations and allow them to play through things,” Sullivan said. “Or we try to be proactive and make adjustments.”

Sullivan spoke from what he’s learned as to why there haven’t been many changes to the Penguins’ outlook.

“I do think that patience is an important aspect of coaching,” Sullivan said. “And allowing a little bit of a process where players have an opportunity to figure it out.”

It seems like only minimal changes will be made to the Penguins lineup for the time being; the group is confident and the coaching staff knows the players can be better.

There will be immediate tests as the Penguins take on a pair of Stanley Cup contenders for their next two games.
