The Pittsburgh Penguins never worked with a lead in their most recent matchup with the New York Rangers.

There was no love lost between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers in their last meeting, and with three meetings in a week, the intensity was likely going to stick around.

The Penguins looked to maintain the upper hand over the Rangers, this time at Madison Square Garden.

Tristan Jarry struggled before being pulled against the Montreal Canadiens, but head coach Mike Sullivan decided to go with him as the starter in New York.

Just under three minutes into the game, the Rangers notched an early goal to take the lead.

Another defensive breakdown from the Penguins leads straight to a Mika Zibanejad breakaway.

The Rangers held that one-goal lead through the remainder of the first period and looked like the more prepared team.

Penguins defender Jeff Petry took an elbow to the face from Rangers’ forward Tyler Motte and did not return to the game.

With the Penguins down to five defenders, they were in an uphill battle to find a victory.

After no goals for the majority of the second frame, Sidney Crosby found Rickard Rakell in front for the game-tying goal.

The Penguins didn’t hold the lead long, though as a broken situation between Jeff Carter and P.O. Joseph ended up behind Jarry to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead.

The Rangers again took a one-goal lead into intermission giving the Penguins another up hill battle.

Jarry was putting together a solid performance and doing everything he could to keep the Penguins in the game.

Jake Guentzel potted his 30th goal of the season to knot the game at two, but it was a tie that would again not last long.

Just over two minutes after Guentzel’s game-tying goal, Chris Kreider beat Brian Dumoulin in front of the net and found the back of the net.

With Jarry at the net for the extra attacker, Kreider buried his second of the game, sealing the deal for the Rangers.

The Penguins weren’t expected to win each of the three games against the Rangers, but the poor play from a few certain players continues to sink the team.

Heading into the week, there was a chance the Penguins could reach the Rangers in the standings, but with two straight losses in regulation all but guaranteed they'll stay in the wild card.
