Brandon Sutter played three seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and was rarely out of the lineup.

After being released from his professional tryout, Brandon Sutter has announced his retirement after 13 seasons in the NHL, three of which spent with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

During those three years with the Penguins, Sutter was a face of consistency and missed only three games in that time.

Through 209 games in Pittsburgh, Sutter recorded 45 goals and 33 assists for 78 points as a consistent third-line center.

Over the course of his career, Sutter played in 770 games, scored 152 goals and 137 assists for 289 total points.

Sutter played 50 career playoff games and recorded 19 points split between nine goals and nine assists.

Most recently, Sutter was signed to a PTO with the Edmonton Oilers, but was released after one preseason game.

According to Sutter, his health is what forces this decision; in a statement he said he is getting healthier, but wants to do right by his family.

A statement from Sutter is below:

I’m grateful for the opportunity that Ken, Jay and the Oilers organization have provided to me the past few weeks. You need to be 100 percent healthy to compete in the NHL, and although my health continues to improve, in consideration of my health and family, I am officially retiring from hockey.

Thank you to the Oilers, Canucks, Penguins and Hurricanes, as well as all my past coaches, trainers and teammates for the incredible experiences throughout my 13 seasons in the NHL.
