The greatest goalie in Pittsburgh Penguins history might be nearing the end of his NHL career.
One of the greatest players in Pittsburgh Penguins history says he might be coming to the end of the road as a professional hockey player.
Marc-Andre Fleury is the Penguins’ all-time leader in wins by a goalie and said following the Minnesota Wild’s opening round playoff defeat that next season might be his last.
With one year remaining on his contract, Fleury stated that he plans on playing in the 2023-24 season but that is likely the end.
Prior to the start of the 2022-23 season, Fleury signed a two-year contract with the Wild, but was willing to retire after one year if his skill didn’t meet proper standards.
With a 24-16-4 record in 46 games, Fleury believes he’ll be able to end his career on a high note.
With 544 career wins, Fleury sits just seven wins behind Patrick Roy for the second most in NHL history; he is also only 15 games shy of 1,000 in his career.
Both of those milestones are more than reachable with just one more season in the NHL.
Penguins fans have been begging for Fleury to return to Pittsburgh ever since he left in the 2017 Expansion Draft, and there were times where it seemed pretty close to happening over the last six years.
While Fleury has a full no-move clause with the Wild, he still feels a sense of pride and faith towards the Penguins.
A reunion wouldn’t be totally out of the question, but it would have to come at the right price and situation.
Fleury will turn 39 in November and his talent isn’t guaranteed to last into next season, but the Penguins do need a new outlook between the pipes.
Bringing Fleury back to Pittsburgh as a 1B with whoever the new management decides should be the starter in 2023-24 could be an upgrade from Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith.
Regardless, no matter how his career ends, Fleury will always be looked at as the greatest goalie in Penguins’ history and one of the best of all-time.
He’ll have one more year to cement his legacy as a true Hall of Famer and someone who might have their number retired by the black and gold.
