Jason Spezza Could Join Penguins in Unexpected Way

It's very possible Jason Spezza follows Kyle Dubas to the Pittsburgh Penguins, but it might not be in a traditional sense.

Pittsburgh Penguins new President of Hockey Ops Kyle Dubas on building a team to compete in the Metropolitan Division.

When the Pittsburgh Penguins announced Kyle Dubas as president of hockey operations, the speculation began about who he might look at hiring as his general manager.

A hire for GM might not come for a while, but many have wondered if Jason Spezza finds himself joining the Penguins in the near future.

After nearly 20 years as a player in the NHL, Spezza joined the Toronto Maple Leafs front office as an assistant general manager.

Spezza worked closely with Dubas in Toronto and resigned from the team after just a year in his position.

Not only did Spezza give his resignation after a single season, but he did it on the same day the Maple Leafs fired Dubas.

Spezza might not join the Penguins as general manager, but it seems likely he’ll join in some capacity.

Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek on the 32 Thoughts Podcast believe Spezza will eventually end up in the Penguins’ organization.

Likely not as GM, but rather working with the Penguins parent company, Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

When Spezza resigned, he still had term left on his deal, meaning the Maple Leafs could block him from working in another NHL team’s front office.

Friedman and Marek think an easy work around to that would be Spezza joining FSG rather than the Penguins.

With Dubas at the helm in Pittsburgh, multiple hires are likely to be made in the near future; while a new GM might not be in the cards for a couple of months, there is no shortage of names to keep an eye on.
