Before the Pittsburgh Penguins hired Kyle Dubas, he had those closest to him by his side.
Earlier this week, Pittsburgh Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas received and honorary doctorate from his alma mater Brock University.
After being presented with the doctorate, and officially being referred to as Dr. Dubas, the Penguins’ president spoke to the graduating class.
Dubas talked about his time at Brock University, but also touched on his firing from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“I had never been fired before,” Dubas said. “It was my first time. Hopefully my last.”
Dubas shared with the audience some of the things that he had learned between his departure from the Maple Leafs to his arrival with the Penguins.
It was those lessons of passion and difficulty that Dubas imparted on the graduates.
“Find something that you really still love when it get’s incredibly hard,” Dubas said. “That’s for you. Invest in yourself when you get there.”
Dubas said that the biggest lesson he learned between his firing and hiring is that the ones that he relied on most during those difficult moments are the same ones that he sat next to at his own Brock University graduation in 2007.
“They were the ones that pushed me to take the conversations with the Penguins’ staff,” Dubas said. “Along the way when you fail… it’s always the same people that are there to help you and lift you up.”
During his speech, Dubas also discussed the time he spent as a student at the University and working with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
