A loss to the Boston Bruins has continued to pull the Pittsburgh Penguins playoff odds in the wrong direction.
PITTSBURGH - In the matter of just a few weeks, the Pittsburgh Penguins have seen wild swings in postseason chances.
From north of 90% to hovering around the low 40s, the Penguins aren’t making things easy on themselves.
Not only do they have to worry about themselves, but multiple other teams in the hunt are finding their legs again.
Following their loss to the Boston Bruins, the Penguins now have a 43.3% chance of reaching the playoffs, according to moneypuck.com.
That number sits them in third out of three main teams still fighting for the two Eastern Conference wild card spots.
The New York Islanders still have the best odds and three points on the Penguins with an 84.4% chance.
The Florida Panthers, meanwhile have fought off their four-game losing streak and notched three straight wins.
Thanks to their success, the Panthers have overtaken the Penguins in the standings and hold a 68.7% chance of reaching the postseason.
With six games remaining in the season, it’s vitally important that the Penguins collect as many points as possible and that starts with an immediate battle with the Philadelphia Flyers.
If the Penguins can knock off the Flyers, they’ll jump back into the second wild card spot, but also lose their game in-hand.
The Penguins are focused on what they can control, and that’s winning as much as possible down the stretch.
Scoreboard watching is inevitable, but they are looking solely at what lies ahead for them, and not the outcomes of other games.
