Ty Smith, Rem Pitlick, and Avery Hayes have all been brought back to the Pittsburgh Penguins roster.
After sending a handful of names through waivers, the Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled a couple of names back from the AHL.
It was announced that the Penguins recalled defenseman Ty Smith and forwards Avery Hayes and Rem Pitlick.
Smith and Pitlick cleared waivers prior to the team trip to Nova Scotia, and head coach Mike Sullivan stated they were dropped due to the logistics of the travel.
While planning for the trip may have interfered with their time in Pittsburgh, there was still a threat that another team could make a claim, especially on a guy like Smith.
It’s still possible that performance evaluation went into the decision making as the Penguins have a surplus of defenders still fighting for spots in the NHL roster.
Smith was among that fight, but noticeably lagging behind his peers.
The move to bring these names back to the NHL training camp roster is likely to give NHL regulars a rest for the next preseason game.
The Penguins have a pair of preseason games remaining before the puck officially drops on the 2023-24 regular season.
