J.T. Miller looked like the Pittsburgh Penguins' missed target at the trade deadline, now he may never arrive.
The Pittsburgh Penguins has come to an end and Fenway Sports Group has started the search for a whole new hockey operations staff.
On the morning following the Penguins’ final game of the season, it was announced that Ron Hextall, Brian Burke, and Chris Pryor were all relieved of their duties.
While FSG looks for replacements in the front office, a certain $8 million bullet may have been dodged.
At the trade deadline, the Penguins’ front office reportedly made a hard push for Vancouver Canucks forward J.T. Miller.
Later reports indicated that a deal was far enough along that Jason Zucker and a pair of first round picks would have gone the other way.
Miller may be a productive player on a very unproductive Canucks team, but he’s 30-years-old and is about to start an eight-year, $8 million per year contract that features a full no-move clause.
In 81 games this year, Miller scored 32 goals and 50 assists for 82 points.
Miller would have brought plenty of offense, but that contract would anchor the Penguins’ cap situation for a number of years.
A new management staff in Pittsburgh likely means the Penguins’ pursuit of Miller is over.
Unless the new group finds value in Miller, and a trade happens before the start of the new contract year he’s likely staying put in Vancouver.
Miller also said himself that he doesn’t think he’ll be traded this offseason.
There’s a long summer ahead for both the Penguins and Canucks, but unless there’s an unexpected breakthrough, Miller won’t be going anywhere.
