The Pittsburgh Penguins have a smaller roster and are quickly gearing up for the start of a new season.
A majority of the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup in their next exhibition matchup against the Buffalo Sabres will be the stars and NHL regulars.
A round of cuts has already been made to the Penguins training camp roster, their top prospect has been assigned back to the WHL, and another round or trimming is right around the corner.
It’s safe at this point to say the Penguins are well into camp and are ramping things up with the regular season approaching.
Head coach Mike Sullivan can feel that the season is getting closer and the team is beginning to take shape.
Following a training camp practice that consisted of mostly NHL names, Sullivan ushered in the next step towards the season.
“We went from three groups to two groups,” Sullivan said. “Clearly the NHL group is the core of our team. We feel like we’re in the next phase of training camp.”
The Penguins have had multiple teams worth of players since the start of camp, but soon enough, they should be down to just one group.
According to the Penguins schedule, there will no longer be ‘team 1’ or ‘team 2’ practices; it’s just a full-squad practice with whoever has survived two rounds of cuts.
The Penguins roster is not yet locked in, there are still plenty of battles for lineup positions and contracts in some cases.
With a mostly NHL group hitting the ice for the first time, however, the bubble players are running low on time and those still in the fight should only ramp up their intensity.
