Penguins vs Sabres: Core Group Returns

The Pittsburgh Penguins will dress a lineup of NHL regulars in their preseason tilt against the Buffalo Sabres.

Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Valtteri Puustinen has to do more to separate himself from the pack at Penguins training camp.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are barreling towards their regular season opener. Approaching their fourth preseason game, the organization made several moves to further trim down their roster. As a result, the lineup against the Buffalo Sabres consists of mostly NHL regulars. Featuring debuts with the team and continued positional battles, here’s what to watch for in the Penguins vs Sabes.

    1.) EK65 in the 412

It’s only the preseason, but the buzz around the Penguins’ newest defender continues to build momentum. Erik Karlsson is set to make his debut appearance at PPG Paints Arena and it should be a joy to see.

While this game should be a tune-up game for the Swedish All-Star, it’s also the first opportunity for the Penguins’ faithful to enjoy watching another superstar in the black and gold.

2.) Depth Battles In Full Force

The most difficult question for the Penguins to answer this training camp remains the same halfway through the preseason schedule: what will the bottom six forwards look like October 10th against the Chicago Blackhawks?

The good news is that the question remains due to solid play from a variety of options. Players like Alex Nylander, Sam Poulin, Radim Zohorna, Vinnie Hinostroza, and Andreas Johnsson have all stood out at various times in training camp and the first few preseason contests.

Against the Sabres, look out particularly for Austin Wagner. He was a camp invite with 178 NHL games experience over the last few season. He could be just the type of defense first forward to endear himself to the coaching staff and earn a fourth line role

3.) Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic

While it hasn’t been officially stated by head coach Mike Sullivan, the presumptive pair of goaltenders who will enter the regular season are both dressing against Buffalo. With crease patrolling duties shared by Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic, the Penguins are eager to see if this new tandem can quickly surpass last year’s league average play at the position.
