The Pittsburgh Penguins may have been hit with injuries, but that doesn't mean Patrick Kane is the answer.
It didn’t take the Pittsburgh Penguins much time to be hit with injuries to multiple key players.
Prior to their Thanksgiving Eve match against the New York Rangers, the Penguins announced injuries to forward Rickard Rakell and possibly Bryan Rust.
Rust took the ice prior to practice but left before things kicked off; head coach Mike Sullivan stated he was being evaluated for a lower-body injury.
Defenseman Chad Ruhwedel was also placed on the shelf on a week-to-week basis; with P.O. Joseph still out of the lineup and John Ludvig still technically awaiting a return the Penguins signed Dmitri Samorukov to an NHL contract.
While the blue line seems to be taken care of, a faction of Penguins fans believes the injuries to their forwards are enough to take a stab at one of the biggest free agent names still available.
Three-time Stanley Cup champion Patrick Kane has been eyeing a new contract for months and is nearing full health after offseason hip resurfacing surgery.
As enticing as a name like Kane can be, and the offense he was once able to produce is tremendous, the Penguins would be wise to stay away from him.
For starters, it’s not like Rakell is done for the year; sure, it’s ‘longer-term,’ but at some point he and his contract will return, giving the Penguins no space to work with against the salary cap.
We also still don’t know the full extent of Rust’s injury; sure, if he is also out long-term then the Penguins should try and find some extra help, but it should be Kane.
Soon to be 35-years-old, Kane doesn’t add any youth like many fans continue to beg for for the Penguins.
It’s also becoming increasingly clear that Kane’s best years are far behind him and he can’t produce at a top level anymore.
He only scored one goal in the first round matchup between Kane’s Rangers and the New Jersey Devils who won in seven games.
Not only that, but teams have already shown their interest in Kane and the Penguins haven’t gone anywhere near the situation.
Multiple teams have surrounded the Kane rumor mill and has his decision comes closer, the Penguins have never been brought up.
If they enter the race now, they’re playing from too far behind.
The Penguins may need help on offense if these injuries continue to pile up, but Kane shouldn’t be the answer.
