The Pittsburgh Penguins can add an impact defender by selecting Eric Emery.
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins seek quality in the 2024 NHL Draft. With just a few defensive prospects in the system, the Penguins need more reinforcements in the pipeline.
One player who the Penguins may target in the draft is defender Eric (EJ) Emery. A product of the United States Development Team Program (USNTDP), Emery would add a completely different element to the Pens' system. Here's a breakdown of his game and what he might bring.
Position: Defenseman
Height: 6’3
Weight: 185 pounds
Shoots: Right
2023-24 Team: USNTDP (USA)
THN Draft Ranking: 45th
Emery is not one receiving the fanfare the players from the USNTDP tend to receive around draft time, but he is an impressive prospect nonetheless.
Emery sticks out as one of the best stay-at-home defensemen. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s nasty to play against, and he’s an excellent penalty killer. He has an incredibly long reach, so he’s constantly a threat to poke check or intercept a pass. And he gives up his body with almost complete disregard when it comes to blocking shots.
What also sticks out is his bursts of speed, especially in the defensive zone. While he isn’t the most gifted skater or offensive player, he seems to have a second level dedicated solely to defensive plays. When there is a loose puck anywhere in his own zone, Emery is always nearby, ready to start the breakout or disrupt the opposition.
The biggest hurdle for Emery is his offensive production. It just wasn’t there this past season with the USNTDP. He only put up 16 assists over 61 games and failed to register a goal. That doesn’t mean he is inept offensively, but he will need to hone his skills and focus on that part of his game to become an impact defenseman at the next level truly.
NHL Player Comparison: Chris Tanev
NHL ETA: 2027-28
There’s no doubt that Emery needs a few seasons to develop, something he’ll get the chance to do at the University of North Dakota. If he can add more offensive potential in the NCAA, he has the makings of a future top-four defensemen in the NHL, regardless of his point totals.
