Nearing November, the Pittsburgh Penguins are yet to be happy about the outcomes of their games.

Nearing November, the Pittsburgh Penguins are yet to be happy about the outcomes of their games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins weren’t proud of their start to the 2023-24 season; a 2-3-0 record with all three losses coming to non-playoff teams.

A four-game home stand was supposed to be a breath of fresh air for the Penguins and a chance to get themselves back on track.

As it turns out, the four-game set only made things worse for the team as they took three more losses and slipped to dead last in the Eastern Conference.

Despite the losses, the Penguins looked like the better team for a majority of the time on home ice; their most recent matchup against the Anaheim Ducks saw them pepper 42 shots on goal.

Sidney Crosby himself had a career-high 12 shots; The Ducks only mustered 27, but four beat Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry, including an extremely timely one in the dying seconds.

It was yet another way for this Penguins team to lose a game they should have easily walked away with.

Head coach Mike Sullivan have firmly believed that the Penguins have been the better team in these games, but called this loss ‘discouraging.’

“There’s been significant amount of time we’ve been the better team,” Sullivan said. “Right now, we’re finding ways to lose. We got to find ways to win.”

The Ducks game winning goal came on a shorthanded break away chance after the Penguins failed to score on a 5-on-3 opportunity.

“[The difference] between a win and loss is one mistake,” Evgeni Malkin said. “We should play better. The team fight all night. We can’t play like this.”

The loss to the Ottawa Senators saw the Penguins put up 42 shots on goal, but only two found the net to the Senators’ five.

Jarry was in net for both of those games, but was pulled against the Senators after three goals.

“I think Tristan has been like our whole team,” Sullivan said. “We’ve had moments where we’ve been really good, we’ve had moments where we haven’t been.”

Nearing the 10-game mark of the season, the Penguins are running out of time to be in good position for the long push.

They’re already playing from behind, and that will only continue if things don’t start going their way soon.
