If Tristan Jarry can have a great season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he should be at the top of the list for Team Canada.
Thanks to the NHL and NHLPA discussing the possibility of a brand new international tournament, multiple Pittsburgh Penguins will have a chance to represent their native countries.
While plenty of players on the Penguins roster are deserving of a chance to sport their county’s colors, it isn’t a guarantee for any of them.
Even Sidney Crosby could be aged out by the time the next tournament rolls around.
That being said, Crosby still has a great chance of representing Team Canada at least one more time.
There is one more Penguin on the current roster that could surprise and steal a spot on Team Canada’s lineup.
Tristan Jarry has an opportunity to prove he is one of the best Canadian born goalies in the NHL right now.
Think of some of the best goalies in the league; Connor Hellebuyck is American and so is Jake Oettinger; Ilya Sorokin, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Igor Shesterkin all Russian.
Even Juuse Saros is from Finland; most predictions for a Team Canada goalie fall to Carter Hart, Spencer Knight, or Jordan Binnington.
Jarry can easily prove to be better than all three of those names in no time.
Hart is a good goalie but plays on a bad team in the Philadelphia Flyers and hasn’t done much recently to help his team win.
Knight has tremendous upside between the pipes but hasn’t been able to see consistent time in the NHL.
Binnington has been on the decline ever since winning the Stanley Cup in 2019.
If Jarry can put up an outstanding season in 2023-24, there is no reason why his name couldn’t be in the conversation as Team Canada’s goalie.
Other options that are out there include Marc-Andre Fleury who might not even be playing by then, or Logan Thompson who has great potential but needs more time to show his worth.
