Which major decisions will the Pittsburgh Penguins face in the coming months?

Which major decisions will the Pittsburgh Penguins face in the coming months?

It is a situation that Pittsburgh Penguins fans haven't been in since 2006, and some haven't ever seen it. A season encapsulated by blown leads and losing streaks officially ended last night as the Penguins fell to the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets. So what's next?

The biggest impending decision for the Pittsburgh Penguins belongs to their owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG). The fate of general manager Ron Hextall and president of hockey operations Brian Burke is sealed if you ask anyone on Twitter. However, FSG has remained silent all year and, despite rumors that wheels are in motion for their dismissal, could grant Hextall and Burke another kick at the can.

It is unlikely that anyone who watched this team throughout the year would feel like the men in charge of personnel were good at their job, but then again, are we sure FSG was watching?

Beyond the front office, many personnel decisions loom over the next few months. Veterans Brian Dumoulin and Jason Zucker have expiring contracts and will likely both look to stay in Pittsburgh. Young and unproven players Alex Nylander, Valtteri Puustinen, and Ty Smith sit on expiring deals with little NHL playing time under their belts.

Then there is Tristan Jarry. Jarry explained to Rob Rossi of the Athletic that he is still dealing with injuries and has been all season long. With the 27-year-old goaltender mercurial netminder looking for a new deal, the Penguins will have to figure out how much faith they have in Jarry after an injury-riddled season.

It will be another busy offseason for the Penguins, and you can expect the action to kick off quickly.
