The San Jose Sharks coaching staff learned a few things in the team's 2-1 OT loss last night.

Dean Tait - Hockey Shots - Preseason Takeaways: Sharks Lose 2-1 to Kings in OT

The San Jose Sharks fell to the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in OT last night.

Here's what David Quinn's coaching staff learned.

    1. Offense needs to be more creative

Quinn wants his team to get to the inside of the rink. Between the faceoff dots and in front of the net. Last night, against a Kings team not playing any of their vets, the Sharks did not do that.

The team's speed was on display, but not the aggressiveness to get inside and win the one-on-one races.

"We didn't do much offensively at all. There wasn't a lot of offensive anticipation before we got a puck," Quinn said postgame. "We didn't play [with a] fast approach, so we always let them beat us to the middle, which makes it difficult. We weren't sharp tonight."

    2. Anthony Duclair kills penalties

Quinn deployed Nico Sturm and Anthony Duclair as the first PK unit of the San Jose Sharks last night.

In 490 career games, Duclair has 180 minutes on the ice shorthanded. Duclair was regularly used as a penalty killer as a member of the Ottawa Senators during the 19-20 season.

"I think he's got that ability. I'm trying to find out if he can do it," Quinn said. "I want to see him in every situation that I can from a penalty kill standpoint. He certainly has the speed and the intelligence, so he should be a guy that we can use on the kill."

The PK has been a strength of San Jose as they finished seventh in the NHL last season.

    3. Players have been skating hard in camp

Some of last night's offensive struggles could be attributed to the intense skating that Quinn has drilled during training camp.

Although being tired is no excuse in the NHL, today marks the San Jose Sharks' second day off since camp began on Sept. 21.

The roster size is still significant, so it is hard to work on systems. Throughout camp, Quinn has had his team run a lot of skating and battle drills.

"It's five days in a row for us. You guys have watched. We haven't taken the foot off our pedal yet to really prepare for games," Quinn said. "So we looked like we played a little bit slow and had some heavy legs tonight. We want to get ready for the 12th. Now we'll be able to practice with some line combinations and have some continuity."
