The San Jose Sharks have lost 12 games in a row, but to end it, they need to continue to put their head down and work.
The Sharks lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-1 last night and continue to struggle in all areas of the game.
Head coach David Quinn called last night's performance the worst of the season. That includes the back-to-back games where San Jose gave up ten goals.
Mario Ferraro has sounded off multiple times about the fact that the Sharks need to work harder than every team they play to have a chance to win.
"I don't quite think that we were the harder-working team. Around here, that can't happen. We're not going to win games that way," Ferraro said after Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Maple Leafs. "Obviously, they may have more skill down their lineup than we do, but it's going to come down to who really works hard. That's who's going to win the game."
The Sharks will face the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow and seemingly had a good day of practice today.
David Quinn's method for practice after a frustrating loss this season has been to have a competitive practice involving small-area games. Today, Quinn split the group and had the losing team do pushups.
Quinn is trying to make it so there can be some competitiveness in practice and joy in any small victory. At the heart of any athlete is a competitive fire, and while this is against teammates, this type of practice allows the Sharks to distance themselves, at least a little bit, from any struggles they have been going through.
San Jose's next five games come against non-playoff teams, which is just what the doctor ordered. That isn't to say that these games will be easier, but they won't have to go against the league's elite talents, like Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and Auston Matthews.
Quinn has said throughout the season that nobody in the league can feel sorry for the San Jose Sharks, and he is correct. This is a professional sport, and the Sharks are in the midst of a rebuild and are going through it.
Losing this much will weigh on any team, but this is a massive change of pace for a team like the Sharks, who have had so much regular-season success in franchise history.
The Sharks will have a chance to get out of this losing streak tomorrow against the Montreal Canadiens.
