Former San Jose Sharks players Noah Gregor and Martin Jones are stepping into big spots for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In the Maple Leafs' last game against the New York Rangers, Gergor skated alongside Auston Matthews and William Nylander on the team's top line. He played a season-high 17:40, finishing with one assist.
"Tried to keep the shifts short," Gregor said. "Get my rest when I can, but I want to play as much as I can, so I will gladly take the extra ice time."
Read why Gregor was chosen for the first line at THN's Toronto Maple Leafs site.
Gregor joined the Leafs on a PTO and was rewarded with a one-way contract.
Gregor proceeded to score Toronto's first goal of the season.
Gregor's speed has made him a valuable addition to the Toronto penalty kill. Gregor has four goals this season, and one of them came shorthanded.
Something that has changed in Gregor's game is his ability to capitalize on scoring chances. Gregor has been a regular fourth-liner for the Leafs this season, but with four goals in 26 games, he could have the opportunity to beat his career high of ten, especially if he stays on the first line.
Another former Shark, Martin Jones, is taking on a prominent role with the Maple Leafs. The netminder could see some extended NHL action due to Joseph Woll's injury.
Jones has appeared in two games for the Leafs but has earned victories in both.
First, he came in to relieve Woll against the Ottawa Senators. He allowed one goal on ten shots. He got his first start as a member of the Leafs on the road against the Metro Division leader New York Rangers.
Jones stopped 28/31 shots, helping Toronto to a 7-3 victory.
Ilya Samsonov has been inconsistent in goal this season, and if he continues to struggle, Jones could see more starts come his way as long as Woll is out.
Both these former Sharks players have made their impact on the Maple Leafs in their respective ways.
