San Jose Sharks forward Alexander Wennberg scored a fantastic overtime-winning goal to help beat his former team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, 2-1.
Wennberg went from his blue line, through two defenders, and around Zach Werenski before beating Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins high glove.
Wennberg played 415 games with the Blue Jackets from 2014 to 2020. Merzlikins and Wennberg were teammates during the 19-20 season. The center was bought out of the final three years of a six-year contract he signed before the 17-18 season, and he hasn't forgotten about that or where to score on Merzlikins.
"It's a team that bought me out, and it's kind of ironic having a little luck there, scoring against them. I had great memories from Columbus, so I feel like it's always fun to play against them. Obviously, scoring a goal and helping the team win, I think that's all that matters for me," Wennberg said postgame. "At the end of the day, the one thing I know is to shoot high glove on Elvis. [I have a] little bit of tricks up my sleeve, but that's from playing against the guy for several years."
Wennberg's overtime goal was his third of the season, bringing his total to seven points in 13 games. Tonight was the second overtime goal he's scored this season.
