
The San Jose Sharks' season is just around the corner. NHL training camps opened yesterday and today, players returned to the ice for the start of on-ice activities. That brings us to just 21 days away from the official kickoff of the 2025-26 season against the Vegas Golden Knights on Oct. 9 at 10 p.m.
Because of that, let's take a look at the Sharks’ long history with the jersey number 21.
There have been 13 players to wear the number. The first time it was worn was back in the 1991-92 season, which was the Sharks' first in the NHL and the last time it was worn was just last season in 2025.
First up, Craig Coxe who wore the number for the Sharks' inaugural season back in 1991-92. After spending six years with the Vancouver Canucks, and brief stints with the St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames, Coxe made his way to San Jose, but only played in 10 games. In those 10 games, he scored two goals but failed to record an assist.
Peter Ahola wore No. 21 next during the 1992-93 season. He played for four teams in three years, before making a stop in San Jose. During that season, he also played for the Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins. He played in 20 games for the Sharks and had two goals and three assists for five points. He went on to play two games during the 1993-94 season with the Flames before his time in the NHL came to an end.
Dave Brown wore No. 21 during the 1995-96 season with the organization. He previously spent 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers and three with the Edmonton Oilers before his time in San Jose. In his time with the club, he played in 37 games and had 4 points.
Tony Granato was the fourth player to wear the number for the Sharks. He wore it for five seasons, from 1996-2001. He was best known for his time with the Kings, but he did play a fairly long time for the Sharks. In his time with the organization, he played in 278 games and scored 57 goals and 42 assists for 99 points. His highest point total with the team was during the 1996-97 season when he had 40 points.
Jim Fahey is next, he played for three seasons with the Sharks from 2002-06. Unfortunately, he didn't get to play in a lot of games during his time in the NHL. He appeared in 92 games over his NHL career, 79 of them came as a member of the Sharks. He scored one goal and 23 assists for 24 points while with the club.
Alexei Semenov was the sixth player to wear No. 21. He played two seasons with the club and six in total over his career. During his time with the Sharks, he appeared in 69 games and scored 12 points. He finished his career in the NHL with 211 total games played and scored 33 points.
Scott Nichol was the next player to wear No. 21 for the Sharks. He spent 13 years in the NHL, with two of them within the organization. He was an NHL journeyman who moved around the NHL quite often. During his time with the club, he played in 135 games and scored 26 points as well as had 122 PIM.
22 Days Until Opening Day: The Sharks' History of Number 22
The San Jose Sharks' season is just around the corner. NHL training camps opened today with teams hosting media availabilities and fitness testing. That brings us to just 22 days away from the official kickoff of the 2025-26 season against the <a href="https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/vegas-golden-knights">Vegas Golden Knights</a> on Oct. 9 at 10 p.m.
T.J. Galiardi suited up for the Sharks for two seasons from 2011-13. After spending four seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, he joined San Jose and played in 50 games, scoring six goals and nine assists for 15 points. After leaving the Sharks, he played for the Flames and Jets before heading to Russia to continue his career.
Ben Smith is next on the list who spent two seasons with the Sharks from 2014-16. He played seven seasons in the NHL, suiting up for the Chicago Blackhawks, Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs. During his time with San Jose, he played in 52 games and had 10 points. Over his seven-year career, he played in 237 total games and scored 54 points. After his time in the NHL, he headed overseas to Germany and Sweden.
Brandon Davidson wore the No. 6 and 21 for the Sharks during the 2019-20 season all within five games with the club. Over his seven-year NHL career, he spent four seasons with the Oilers before bouncing around the NHL. During his short stint with the club, he didn't record a single point. Over his NHL career, he played in 180 games and scored 23 points.
Next up, Jacob Middleton who wore No. 21 and 67 for the Sharks, played four seasons with the organization to start his career. During that time, he played in 59 games and had 12 points. It wasn't until his last season with the club that he started to become a household name, which was the same season he was dealt to the Minnesota Wild, where he has been ever since.
Michael Eyssimont wore No. 21 during the 2022-23 season which was one of his three teams he suited up for during that season. In his short time with the Sharks, he played in 20 games and had eight points. He became most known for his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning, before he was dealt to the Seattle Kraken just last season.
Lastly, Alexander Wennberg who currently wears the number, is entering his second season with the organization. After starting his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets, he was bought out and joined the Florida Panthers. He then joined the Kraken and the Rangers before signing with the Sharks and had a bounce back year. Last season, he had 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points in 77 games.
