We are just 37 days away from the San Jose Sharks opening their season at the SAP Center against the Vegas Golden Knights on Oct. 9 at 10 p.m.

Because of that, let’s take a look at the players in franchise history who have worn the number 37. There have been 12 players to wear the number, the first one came in 1991-92 when the Sharks came into league and the latest one is still a member of the team. So, let's dive into the players that have wore #37 for San Jose.

The first player to wear #37 was Don Barber, who wore the number during the 1991-92 season. His situation was unique, as when he joined the Sharks, it was his third team that year. He started the season with the Winnipeg Jets, where he played in 11 games. He then became a member of the Quebec Nordiques, appearing in two games before joining the Sharks. With San Jose, he played 12 games and scored one goal and three assists for four points.

Next up was Rob Gaudreau, who spent two seasons with the Sharks after making his debut in 1992-93. In his first season, he played 59 games and scored 23 goals and 20 assists for 43 points. In his second season, he had 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points in 84 games. After his time with the Sharks, he went on to play with the Ottawa Senators. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get back to the level he had previously shown, and his NHL career came to an end after four seasons.

Ville Peltonen was the third player to wear it, though only for one of the two seasons he was with the club. In his first season, he played 31 games and scored 13 points. In his second season, wearing number seven, he had just five points in 28 games. After his time with the Sharks, he went on to play for the Florida Panthers and the Nashville Predators.

Stéphane Matteau was the fourth player to wear the number, which he used for three of his five seasons with the Sharks. His time with the organization came later in his career, with his first season at age 28. He actually spent more time in San Jose than with any other team in his career. In total, he played 345 games for the Sharks and scored 119 points. By the end of his time, his production slowed down, with just 11 points in 55 games. He would go on to play for the Panthers in the 2002-03 season before his NHL career came to an end.

Miikka Kiprusoff was the fifth player to wear the number, but also the third on this list to change his number while with the team, using both 34 and 37. In his three seasons with the Sharks, he played 47 games and posted a 14-21-3 record with a .897 save percentage and 2.84 goals-against average. After leaving San Jose, he became one of the greatest goaltenders in Calgary Flames history.

Curtis Brown wore it from 2004-07, though in that span he also played for the Chicago Blackhawks. In his first year with San Jose during the 2003-04 season, he played 12 games and scored four points. He then spent the 2005-06 season with the Blackhawks before returning to the Sharks in 2006-07. In total, he played 123 games for the Sharks and scored 33 points.

38 Days Until Opening Day: The Sharks' History of Number 38 38 Days Until Opening Day: The Sharks' History of Number 38 The San Jose Sharks season is slowly coming closer, as we enter the month of September, we’ll see training camp and preseason games get underway in the near future. Today, we’re officially 38 days away from the Sharks’ home opener against the Vegas Golden Knights at the SAP Center.

Grant Stevenson was the seventh player to wear 37, during the 2005-06 season. That year, he actually used both 37 and 55 while playing in 47 games and scoring 22 points. The grandson of legendary goalie Glenn Hall, Stevenson only played one season in the NHL but managed to extend his career overseas until 2011-12.

The eighth player to wear 37 was Brad Lukowich, who spent the majority of his NHL career with the Dallas Stars but played for the Sharks in 2008-09. Unfortunately, he went goalless in 58 games, though he did pick up eight assists.

T.J. Galiardi suited up for the Sharks for two seasons from 2011-13. After spending four seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, he joined San Jose and played in 50 games, scoring six goals and nine assists for 15 points. After leaving the Sharks, he played for the Flames and Jets before heading to Russia to continue his career.

Next up was Adam Burish, who played three seasons with the Sharks from 2012-15. He spent nine years in the NHL, most of them with the Blackhawks. After a short stint with the Stars, he joined San Jose at age 30. Over those three years, he appeared in 81 games and scored six points. Burish finished his career with a few seasons in the AHL and overseas in Sweden before retiring in 2015-16.

Fredrik Händemark wore 37 during the 2020-21 season but only managed to play eight games, scoring one goal. His time with the organization was short, splitting that year between the Sharks and 14 games with the Barracuda, before heading back overseas to Russia and Sweden. Last season, he played for the Malmö Redhawks in Sweden and will return there for the 2025-26 season.

Lastly, the player who currently wears 37 for the Sharks is Timothy Liljegren. After starting his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019-20, the 2017 17th overall pick was traded to San Jose at the start of the 2024-25 season. Last year, he played in 67 games, scoring six goals and 11 assists for 17 points. He quickly became a mainstay on the blue line and will most likely return to that role again in 2025-26.

We’ve officially entered the month where hockey returns. September is going to be a busy one for the team, players, and fans, so be sure to keep it locked here for all things Sharks.
