To spike scoring, we should find a way to shrink goalie equipment without jeopardizing stopper safety
“THERE ARE SO MANY good things going on with our game, but we have to stay ahead of the curve with the advances made, whether they are in coaching, equipment or other areas. People involved with the NHL are extremely competitive and will always look for the edge.
When it comes to goaltenders, we certainly don’t want their health and safety compromised in any way. But if you take the size of their equipment, how it’s worn, how it impacts the position and our sport, you have to ask the question: is it something that’s changing and impacting the game? Many people would say it is. I remember a number of great players – Guy Lafleur, for example – used to come down the wing and beat a goaltender with a shot. You don’t see that happen much anymore because current goalie equipment size blocks such a large amount of the net.
Talking about equipment isn’t judging or blaming anybody. It’s about the exchange of ideas. For example, the genesis of discussing equipment size was the discussion of having bigger nets. But the initial reaction to bigger nets was, ‘Let’s look at goalie equipment first,’ because they didn’t want to go against the traditions of the net size and wanted the view of the scoring area to be consistent. Obviously we must ensure safety is always part of the equation.
This isn’t me coming to an absolute conclusion about goalie equipment. It’s about debating the merits of how we want the game played and how we get there. The caretakers for the game need to put in the time and focus on issues that come to the forefront and continually revisit them as our game evolves.
