San Jose Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini scored a career-high three points against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday. His success came after a positive conversation with his head coach.
Celebrini scored two third-period goals and added an assist earlier in the game. The rookie sensation is up to six goals in ten games but has been showing signs of frustration in recent games.
Before last night's game, Celebrini hadn't scored a goal in four games and compiled seven shots. After the 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, head coach Ryan Warsofsky told reporters he had a conversation with Celebrini about his shooting.
"I think with Mac, and he and I have had some conversations, he sometimes wants to shoot it through the goalie. He has a good release, a sneaky release, where you can catch goalies like he did tonight, and when you're not scoring, you press, and that's what happens as a young player," Warsofsky said. "That conversation was after the last game, and he responded. He took in the information."
Warsofsky has also been impressed with Celebrini's defensive play in recent games. His puck battle wins support this claim.
"His game is developing away from the puck defensively," Warsofsky said. "The last couple of games, he's been really good defensively, and he's really coming on as a 200-foot player."
Celebrini is fifth in the league in rookie scoring and second in goals. He's still finding his way in the NHL but is getting better every game he plays.
