The San Jose Sharks are likely getting Nico Sturm back from an upper-body injury and, in a corresponding move, have sent down defenseman Jack Thompson.
Sturm has three goals and three assists in 16 games this season. He's missed the past five games after suffering his injury against the New York Rangers on Nov. 14.
He and head coach Ryan Warsofsky said the center will be a game-time decision against the Los Angeles Kings.
The Sharks have chosen to keep star prospect goalie Yaroslav Askarov in the NHL for now. Thompson's demotion allows the Sharks to open a space on the active roster for Sturm's return.
Thompson has played in 13 games this season and has two goals and three assists. He's struggled to keep a regular spot in the lineup as of late. He's played two of the previous five games. Against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, Thompson played 12:56.
He will join the San Jose Barracuda team, which is looking to regain consistent winning form after a hot start to the season.
