Joe Thornton's iconic No. 19 is officially in the rafters of the SAP Center, and the greatest San Jose Sharks player of all time has now become the second player in team history to earn the honor of a retired jersey number.
Thornton joins long-time friend and teammate Patrick Marleau in the rafters. Thornton ranks first in franchise history in assists (804), second all-time in points (1,055), third in games played (1,104), and fourth in goals (251).
Jumbo Joe made everyone in attendance emotional. With tears flowing, he thanked every single person who had crossed paths with him. From former teammates, coaches, mentors, and his family, the future Hall of Famer made sure not to leave anyone out who had an impact on him and his career.
Thornton thanked his family last. He said every time his parents were in San Jose for a game, they would drive with him to the rink. Thornton said his father, Wayne, would tell him to shoot the puck, and his mother would say she loved him right before he went into the rink.
Douglas Murray told a heartwarming story that no one had ever known. Joe Thornton called Murray to ask for help to move a homeless mother of two kids into a two-bedroom apartment.
Thronton's legacy will forever live at the SAP Center, with his name and number in the rafters.
