Former San Jose Sharks defenseman Calen Addison has signed a PTO deal with the Ottawa Senators.
When the Sharks traded for Addison from the Minnesota Wild, they expected more from the 24-year-old. Addison had shown great potential in a limited role behind top NHL defenseman like Jared Spurgeon.
Unfortunately for Addison and San Jose, there didn't seem to be a good mesh of playstyle and effectiveness on the ice. While Addison didn't cause issues off the ice, his temper sometimes got the best of him, leaving former head coach David Quinn no choice to bench or scratch the d-man.
He showed flashes of potential with a solid breakout pass and could run a powerplay occasionally. In 60 games with the Sharks, he scored one goal and added 11 assists.
While his role was a lot higher in San Jose than with the Wild, that likely contributed to his struggles.
The Senators have two top-tier young defensemen, Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson. If Addison makes the team, he won't be in a higher role than he was in San Jose. That could give Addison better matchups on the ice so he can play his more offensive game without worrying about the defensive side.
There is a solid puck-moving defenseman inside Calen Addison, and the Senators hope to unlock it.
