Per Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now, the San Jose Sharks had a deal to trade Alexander Barabanov to the New York Rangers.
"A source told San Jose Hockey Now that Barabanov was about to be dealt to the New York Rangers before the Hertl shocker reached the finish line about 20 minutes away from the Trade Deadline," SJHN writes.
Barabanov was scratched against the New York Islanders for trade-related reasons, but was never dealt before the trade deadline passed.
There were reports that Barabanov was even informed that he would be traded before the deadline.
One of the reasons why Barabanov couldn't be traded was because the Rangers couldn't fit his $2.5 million cap hit on their roster, so they needed San Jose to use its last salary retainment spot.
"It definitely came into play today," GM Mike Grier said about using the final retainment spot for Hertl. "Unfortunately, it might have knocked us out of maybe a deal."
Sharks head coach David Quinn's message to Barabanov was simple. You're up.
"You're up. This is your line. He and I talked a little bit about it when he was going to sit. I said there's nothing guaranteed that guys get traded," Quinn said. I have a lot of faith in him. He's going to come here and play hard and do the things that he needs to do to be the effective player that he is. Like I said, if you want individual success, you got to be playing for the team cause."
As for what his summer could look like, Quinn said a lot could change during the last 20 games of the season.
"He's gonna be a free agent in July, and a lot can happen between now and then," Quinn said. He's got 20 games to continue to build off coming back from an injury and playing good hockey."
Barabanov played 18:01 against the Ottawa Senators and had two shots on goal. He played on the left wing with Mikael Granlund and Fabian Zetterlund.
