With the San Jose Sharks falling from the No. 1 spot to No. 2 in the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, their chances of landing Matthew Schaefer have taken a hit.
While it’s not out of the question, the odds are lower now—so it’s worth taking a closer look at some of the other top prospects who could be available when it's the Sharks' turn to select.
Starting off with Porter Martone - Brampton Steelheads (OHL).
He has been ranked 4th overall by just about everyone major outlet who prepares mock drafts, including the NHL Central Scouting, Elite Prospects, Future Considerations, Recruit Scouting and Bob McKenzie’s Rankings.
Here at The Hockey News, our own Ryan Kennedy has him ranked #2 and Tony Ferrari has him ranked #5.
Martone is a big bodied forward at 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, who has some of the best skill in the entire draft. Some would argue that he is the most skilled forward, and that could push him up the draft ranks.
In the OHL last season, he had 37 goals and 61 assists for 98 points in 57 games. This landed him seventh in the league in scoring.
Martone is known for his strong balance of skill and physical play, and some scouts suggest that he has a winning mentality and could do well when the pressure is on.
He excels at playing in the offensive zone with his knack for going to the crease and making it tough on the goalies. He also enjoys getting involved physically in post-whistle scrums and getting under the opponents' skin.

THN's own Ferrari had this to say about Martone:
“Martone is the epitome of highly skilled power forwards. His ability to blend power and skill has made for a number of highly entertaining moments this season when watching him play.”
Martone's NHL Comparables:
Scouts have compared Martone to Brady or Matthew Tkachuk, while others see shades of Corey Perry during his prime with the Anaheim Ducks. Personally, I think he plays more like Matthew Knies—but with a better shot.
