The San Jose Sharks have named their alternate captains for the 2025-26 season.
Instead of naming a captain, they are going with five alternate captains, with only one player wearing the "A" in all 82 games.
Starting with Tyler Toffoli, he is the regular alternate captain. He will wear the "A" in every game, which allows the four other players to rotate home and away games.
Toffoli, 33, is now entering his second year with the club. He had a good year last season, scoring 54 points in 78 games. This is his third consecutive season hitting the 30 goal and 50 point mark. Over his career, he has played for the Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets, New Jersey Devils and now of course, the Sharks. He has played in a total of 890 games and scored 290 goals and 285 assists for 575 points.
Next up, Macklin Celebrini will wear the "A" at home games alongside Barclay Goodrow.
Celebrini, 19, is also entering his second year with the Sharks and has already been recognized as a leader in the dressing room. He will have the chance to show what he can do as a leader and hopefully be the next captain of the Sharks.
On the ice last season, he had a phenomenal year. He played in 70 games with the Sharks and had 25 goals and 38 assists for 63 points. He set the rookie record for points and assists. He was also the fastest rookie to hit the 30, 40, 50 and 60 point marks. He also holds the record for the youngest player in Sharks history to make his debut.
Goodrow is next, and as mentioned above he will also wear the letter at home games. He is in his second stint with the organization, after being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning and then playing for the New York Rangers. He was placed on waivers by the Rangers *** years ago and was claimed by the Sharks.
Now 32 years old, he is a great veteran depth player for this organization. In 77 games last season, he had five goals and three assists for eight points. However, with Goodrow it is not about scoring. He does the little things right and is very good on the penalty kill. He is a glue guy who helps in the locker room on an extremely young team, which is also part of the reason he has been named an alternate captain.
For the road games, the Sharks have selected Mario Ferraro and Alexander Wennberg as their alternates.
Wennberg, 30, has rejuvenated his career with the Sharks. After being bought out by the Columbus Blue Jackets, he went on to play for the Florida Panthers, New York Rangers and Seattle Kraken. Wennberg eventually found his way to San Jose. Since joining the team, he has been an incredible addition to both the lineup and locker room.
Last season with the Sharks, he played in 77 games and scored 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points. He is now entering his second year with the organization and looks ready to reach the 40 point mark for just the third time in his career. He has, however, reached the 30 point mark seven times in his 11 year career.
Lastly, Ferraro, 27, is entering his seventh year with the Sharks. He has been an interesting player for the club. He is often the subject of trade rumors, but that does not stop him from giving his best effort year in and year out. In fact, he was the Sharks' King Clancy Memorial Trophy nominee, which is given to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice. He is definitely deserving of being named an alternate.
Last season with the Sharks, he had five goals and 12 assists for 17 points in 78 games. He led all defensemen on the team in takeaways, blocks and hits. He is a workhorse on the Sharks' blue line.
When head coach Ryan Warsofsky announced the alternate captains, he also issued a statement regarding the decision. Here is what he had to say:
"Each of the players that will serve as our leadership group for the 2025-26 season bring an important skillset and character to the room. These individuals embody what it means to be a Shark, and the identity we want to have as a team. As a coaching staff, we are excited to have each of these players in a leadership role and setting an example for the rest of the group."
The Sharks kick off their 2025-26 season against the Vegas Golden Knights tomorrow at the SAP Center, which means Toffoli, Celebrini and Goodrow will be wearing the "A" on opening night.
