The San Jose Sharks could benefit from bringing Mikael Granlund back this summer. He was a key part of their lineup last season before being traded to the Dallas Stars along with Cody Ceci.

The best part? His contract is expiring, which means if he hits the open market, there’s a real shot at a reunion.

It would make a lot of sense for both sides. When Granlund arrived in San Jose as part of the Erik Karlsson trade, expectations were low. But he quickly became one of their most reliable forwards. In 52 games with the Sharks, he put up 15 goals and 30 assists for 45 points — and when he was dealt to the Stars for their playoff run, it left a noticeable gap in San Jose’s lineup.

Given the Sharks aren’t expected to make a big jump in the standings next season, GM Mike Grier could look at this as a smart one-year move. Sign Granlund, get quality production, and then flip him at the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline for more assets. And if the team somehow surprises and finds themselves in the mix, they can hold on to him as their own rental piece.

It’s a win-win for both sides. Granlund gets to play meaningful minutes in a familiar setting and set himself up for another deadline deal or contract next summer. For the Sharks, it’s a low-risk bet on a player they already know fits well — and one who could help them stockpile even more draft capital.
