The San Jose Sharks have acquired goaltender Carey Price and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman Gannon Laroque.
Price, a former Hart and Vezina-winning goaltender, hasn’t played due to injury since the 2021-22 season and will not suit up for the Sharks.
Throughout his career, Price was widely regarded as one of the league’s top goaltenders.
Drafted fifth overall in the 2005 NHL Draft by the Canadiens, Price would go on to play his entire on-ice career with Montreal. He played a total of 712 games for the Canadiens, recording a .917 save percentage and a 2.51 goals against average over that time frame.
Acquiring his contract will give the Sharks increased flexibility, specifically close to the trade deadline, as they’re no longer hovering right above the salary floor. Price’s contract carries an average annual value of $10.5 million and expires at the end of the 2025-26 season.
Laroque was the Sharks’ fourth round draft pick during the 2021 NHL Draft and split last season between the American Hockey League’s San Jose Barracuda and the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder.
While the acquisition of Price won’t help the Sharks on the ice, it’ll certainly pay dividends for general manager Mike Grier once spring comes around.
