Sharks Already Helped Rangers Once; Why A Trade For Jacob Trouba Didn't Make Sense

The fallout between the New York Rangers and their leadership group has been ongoing, and the San Jose Sharks resolved part of it when they acquired Barclay Goodrow last summer.

With the news that Rangers captain Jacob Trouba is being traded to the Anaheim Ducks, the Sharks did the right thing by not getting involved.

The Sharks took on Goodrow's $3,641,667 cap hit when they claimed him off waivers, effectively giving the Rangers more cap space for nothing in return. If the Sharks were to acquire Trouba, they would likely take on the full $8 million cap hit he holds through the end of the 25-26 season. The Ducks pulled the trigger and will take on Trouba's $8 million AAV.

For reference, last season's Norris Trophy winner, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes, only has a $7.85 million cap hit.

Trouba also has a 15-team no-trade list, as did Goodrow. There were reports of Trouba being traded over the summer, but nothing came to fruition. Reports also suggested that the Rangers threatened to put Trouba on waivers if he didn't waive his NTC, similar to Goodrow.

Yes, getting Trouba would've significantly improved the toughness and size of the Sharks' defense core, but it wasn't needed at a significant cap hit. San Jose has tradeable assets in their defense core, possibly Jan Rutta or Mario Ferraro, so adding a player like Trouba would push them down or even out of the lineup, hurting their trade value.

The Sharks and GM Mike Grier have already helped Rangers GM Chris Drury once for free. Goodrow has been a valuable locker room player and mentor to the young team, and Trouba doesn't have two Stanley Cups like Goodrow.
