According to Sheng Peng from NBC Sports Bay Area, he has reported that GM Mike Grier is in fact planning on making a selection with the second overall pick.
There had been some speculation that they may trade it and look to get better as soon as possible. However, now those rumors have been put to bed and now the attention can be turned to who the Sharks intend to select with the pick.
Recently on the 32 Thoughts the Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman suggested that the Sharks could be looking at drafting Anton Frondell over Michael Misa. It seemed like a lock that Misa was heading to San Jose at number 2. But now, there seems to be a growing sense that the Sharks could be taking a long look at Frondell and could be calling his name instead.
It is a tough call, both players are very skilled. Ultimately, it may come down to who they feel will have the best impact on the team long term. At this point, both are considered NHL ready, but some scouts would say Frondell has more maturity right now in his career than Misa does.
Of course, no one outside of the Sharks' organization knows for sure what is going to happen. It is all speculation, which could end up being nothing more than that. Grier and his scouting staff know who they are thinking about drafting and will tell the rest of the NHL on draft night.
