San Jose Sharks prospects Will Smith and Eric Pohlkamp have won gold with Team USA at the 2024 World Junior Championship, defeating Filip Bystedt and Mattias Havelid 6-2 in the final.
Smith finished the tournament with four goals and three assists.
Smith had two primary assists. His first assist was a slapshot pass to New York Rangers prospect Gabe Perreault.
Mattias Havelid got a primary assist on Sweden's first goal to tie the game at one.
Eventually, Team USA got a 3-1 lead, but Sweden brought it to a one-goal game with 5.5 seconds left in the middle frame.
Then, 1:19 into the third period, Perreault won a draw cleanly to Smith, who slid it over to Zeev Buium to restore the two-goal lead.
Smith and Perreault are on a line with Washington Capitals prospect Ryan Leonard for Team USA and at Boston College. Leonard got a well-deserved, hard-working goal to put the game on ice at 5-2.
Congratulations to Will Smith, Eric Pohlkamp, and Team USA on their terrific tournament.
Havelid and Bystedt walk away with Silver medals. This loss likely stings more as the tournament was held in Sweden.
