With the 2025 IIHF World Championships into its second week, it’s a good time to check in and see how the San Jose Sharks players are doing. There’s only one week left in the tournament, which means this is the final push before we find out who takes home medals.
Let’s start with Macklin Celebrini and Team Canada. Celebrini opened the tournament on a line with his childhood idol, Sidney Crosby, and after two weeks, he’s still playing on the second line. He likely would’ve liked to produce more offensively, but he’s got a goal and an assist for two points, is a +3, and has 10 shots on goal. Canada is 4-0-0-0 and has allowed just two goals in four games.
Next up, Will Smith and Team USA. They sit at 3-1-0-1, good for third in Pool B, and are still in solid shape to make a medal round run. Smith has looked strong throughout the tournament. While he hasn’t scored yet, he’s picked up four assists, is a +6, and has six shots on net. The production may not jump off the page, but his play has been hard to miss. A breakout game could be right around the corner.
Now onto Team Sweden, who were expected to have two Sharks in the lineup. Unfortunately, William Eklund suffered a scary skate laceration that kept him out of the tournament. That leaves Alexander Wennberg, and Sweden has been dominant. They’re 5-0-0-0 and three points ahead of Canada in Pool A. Both countries are expected to finish at the top, which should make for a very entertaining medal round.
As for Wennberg, he’s been as steady as expected. He has a goal and two assists, is a +6, and has four shots on goal. His two-way play has stood out, and he’s helped Sweden remain perfect through five games.
Lastly, Pavol Regenda, who’s suiting up for Slovakia. They haven’t had the tournament they were hoping for but are still hanging in the fight for the final spot in Pool A. Regenda has played in three games, has one goal, is a +1, and leads the Sharks group with 11 shots on goal.
As of now, it looks like every Sharks player could be heading to the medal rounds. Slovakia holds just a one-point edge on Latvia though, so there’s still some drama left. With only a week to go, we’ll soon find out where everyone finishes.
I’ll keep you all updated on the medal round schedule, so keep it locked here for more Sharks and Worlds content.
