San Jose Sharks centerman Tomas Hertl scored one goal at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game but fell in the championship to Team Matthews.
The day started with a funny note with Hertl's name getting spelled wrong during the player intros.
Hertl and Team McDavid were down 3-1 with under one minute left in the second half to Team MacKinnon. They scored two goals late and eventually won the game in a shootout.
Hertl assisted on Columbus Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner's first goal.
"It's always like starting a little slower, then somebody goes faster, now I gotta go faster, and I actually got a pretty good sweat," Hertl said. "Honestly, I didn't expect that after the first couple of shifts. Because it was up and down, nobody was talking on the bench because everybody was tired. I was like, it's actually going to be fast. So I think it's good because it makes more controversial games."
Team Matthews also had to win in a shootout to get to the championship match. It was a back-and-forth affair, but ultimately, the hometown team won 7-4.
Auston Matthews, the captain, was named MVP.
Hertl would score his lone goal with a nice backhand shot in the slot.
Hertl walks away from the 2024 NHL All-Star game with a good time. He finally got to meet Justin Bieber after poking fun at the popstar in the 2020 NHL All-Star Game.
"I think he enjoyed being on the ice because he's into hockey," Hertl said about his interaction with Bieber. "It was a quick picture and a great memory."
Hertl told reporters afterward that his parents could come and see him at the event.
The Sharks return to the ice against the Winnipeg Jets on February 14th. San Jose now enters their bye week with a good chance at getting a lot of players back from injury.
