Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports - Oilers Defenseman Should Be on Sharks' Radar

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg was permitted to seek a trade, and the San Jose Sharks must be interested.

Broberg is a 22-year-old Swedish defenseman who hasn't gotten the opportunity he wanted. The 2019 eighth-overall pick is a smooth-skating defenseman who can move the puck well.

He is at his best when he is in transition. His size and skating ability will be significant assets to the Sharks system if he is acquired.

During the 2021-22 season, Broberg scored 23 points in 31 games for the Oilers AHL affiliate.

In ten games in Edmonton this season, he is averaging 10:31 TOI. He has often been the scapegoat for many of the defensive issues for the Oilers this season.

The other key to why the Sharks should be interested is because Edmonton doesn't want picks; they want a player in return. GM Mike Grier is in the business of acquiring young talent and draft capital.

San Jose has a logjam on defense. San Jose has not wanted to waive any defensemen unless it was needed. Nikolai Knyzhov has shown he can play at the NHL level, but he likely wouldn't be enough for this trade.

Matt Benning is on a very team-friendly contract and has played with the Oilers in his career. Jan Rutta has a Stanley Cup pedigree and could interest the Oilers in chasing a championship.

Trading for Broberg should be seen as a similar acquisition to Calen Addison—a young, mobile defenseman who can be a piece to the long-term goal. With the Oilers only wanting players in return, this makes trading for Broberg a no-brainer for Grier.
