The San Jose Sharks (12-31-4) head home to face the New York Rangers (29-15-2) without their No. 1 defenseman, Mario Ferraro.
Ferraro was injured in the second period of last night's 4-3 shootout win against the Los Angeles Kings.
"He's gonna be out for a little bit," Sharks head coach David Quinn said this morning. "Don't have a timeline yet."
The Sharks play four more games, and then the all-star break happens, combined with the NHL-mandated bye week. Quinn said that there is a possibility that Ferraro will be out until after the long break.
"He's clearly our best defenseman, so it hurts," Quinn said about the loss of Ferraro. "It's an opportunity for other guys, and everybody's got to be a little bit better."
Calen Addison will return to the Sharks lineup tonight in place of Ferraro.
"The pace that he and I've talked about," Quinn said about what he wants from Addison. "The simplicity is decision making. When to get involved offensively and try not to force plays."
The Sharks will start Mackenzie Blackwood in goal after Kaapo Kahkonen put on an elite performance last night.
Blackwood will be opposed by Igor Shesterkin for the New York Rangers. The Rangers are coming off a 5-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday and will be well-rested before tonight's game.
Tonight's game will wrap up the season series between these two teams. San Jose lost 6-5 in New York as Artemi Panarin scored a hat trick.
Sharks projected line combinations:
Zetterlund-Hertl-Hoffman
Barabanov-Couture-Duclair
Eklund-Sturm-Kunin
Bailey-Carpenter-Zadina
Thrun-Rutta
Vlasic-Addison
Okhotiuk-Burroughs
Blackwood
Kahkonen
Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. PST and can be seen on NBC Sports California or the Sharks Audio Network.
