Newly acquired defenseman Ty Emberson skated for the first time at San Jose Sharks training camp.
On Saturday, the San Jose Sharks claimed Ty Emberson off waivers from the New York Rangers.
He told THN that he arrived in San Jose on Sunday. His fiance is still back east but will eventually be moving out here.
Sharks head coach David Quinn said he knew Emberson from afar, so there was already some interest when he was put on waivers.
"We had talked about him, but I think they'd already have made up their minds," Quinn said.
He praised that from the top of the organization down, there can be symmetry in how the roster should be constructed.
"I think if you're going to have a successful organization, you have to have that connection," Quinn explained. "We're very fortunate we have it in all three levels, from ownership to management to coaching."
Emberson should bring a strong defensive style that Quinn looks for.
"Just a simple defenseman. I like to make a good first pass and be good defensively," Emberson said. "[I want to be] reliable for my teammates and just be able to go out there and support people and jump in the rush when I can."
The Rangers are loaded on the right side of the defense with Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox and captain Jacob Trouba, so Emberson knew he needed to stand out.
"I was going in there just trying to make a name for himself," Emberson said. "I obviously tried to make the team, but I think there are setbacks with anything, and this is just a new opportunity for me, so I'm really excited for it."
Emberson played with San Jose Sharks forward Ryan Carpenter last season in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Emberson said Carpenter was the first person to reach out when news broke that he was coming to San Jose.
