Dean Tait - Hockey Shots - Mike Grier Feels Sharks Prospects Are Developing Well

The San Jose Sharks have tied the NHL's longest losing streak to start a season, but GM Mike Grier isn't worried about the future.

While meeting with the media today, Grier discussed where the team stands with its prospects.

Starting with Henry Thrun and Shakir Mukhamadullin, Grier explained that the team's situation helped dictate where they began the season.

"The situation we're in, and the environment we're in, wasn't great for a defensive prospect," Grier explained. "Development-wise, it's not great when you don't get to make enough plays, and you're just kind of treading water."

Mukhamadullin has six points in nine games, and Thrun has three points in seven games.

As for how they are developing, Grier says he is happy with how they are being deployed.

"We're happy with what Henry and Shak are doing down there," Grier said. "They're playing heavy minutes, [and] playing in all situations. I think their games are growing because of it,"

As for William Eklund, Grier said that his game is translating well. He doesn't want him to feel like he is the franchise's savior.

"Eklund has been pretty good up here. I don't want to put too much pressure on him to be the guy who's got to score the goal and produce offense for us," Grier said. "It's about making sure he's doing the things we're asking. He has the support, so he's not feeling like he's got the weight of the world to be the savior just because he's a young guy."

Grier doesn't think that Eklund will need to go back to the AHL despite the lack of offense.

"He's a pretty mature kid," Grier said. "If we see his game really getting off the tracks and frustration and things like that sets in too much, then definitely [we will] have to have a talk with him and have a reset."

Danil Gushchin started his AHL season on a tear, scoring 13 points in nine games. As for when he might come to the NHL, Grier said he will get an opportunity.

"[We] want to make sure the environment is right to bring those guys in," Grier said. "We would like to get our act together up here. Get this structure together and be playing the right way before we drop a 21-22 year-old kid in here."

As for what the Sharks have within the organization right now, Grier is pleased with the development progress.
