San Jose Sharks prospect Luca Cagnoni showed out at the 2024 Rookie Faceoff, proving he deserves to play pro hockey.

The defenseman scored points in each game of the tournament, including his only goal in the second game.

The 19-year-old scored 90 points in 65 games in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks. He signed his ELC this summer, giving the Sharks a decision to make.

But there is more than just a decision. Because of Cagnoni's December birthday and San Jose signing him after 2023, the first year of his ELC is burned, no matter where he plays. It wouldn't make sense for the Sharks to send him back to Juniors, especially after the season he just had.

When asked after today's rookie faceoff win against the Colorado Avalanche, Cagnoni said nothing is set in stone.

"[I] Had a big off-season, I got really strong, worked on my first three steps, it's obviously a faster game," Cagnoni told reporters after the game. "I think I feel pretty ready."

San Jose Barracuda head coach John McCarthy, who was behind the bench for the tournament, said everything is on the table for Cagnoni.

"He played a lot, played a lot of minutes, [and he] handled it well," McCarthy said. "As far as what he's going to do, that's above my pay grade, but I was encouraged by his play in this tournament."

Cagnoni led the first powerplay unit all weekend. He fed passes from the point to other top prospects like Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and Quentin Musty. His defense was solid, as well. Despite his 5'9 stature, Cagnoni used his strength and skating ability to defend beautifully.

Sources close to THN indicate the plan is for Cagnoni to turn pro and play for the Barracuda in 24-25. San Jose Hockey Now has reported a similar outcome for the defenseman.
