Dean Tait - Hockey Shots - Sharks Prospects Becoming Stars In Amateur Hockey

The San Jose Sharks' first three picks of the 2023 NHL Draft are all having stellar seasons at the amateur level.

No. 4 overall pick Will Smith is second in scoring for Boston College in the NCAA. He has six goals and 13 assists. He has become the center of their "freshman line, " including other top NHL prospects, Ryan Leonard and Gabe Perrault.

Sharks head coach David Quinn said he is always watching prospects and is happy with how Smith's season is going.

"When you talk to our development people, they're happy with the other areas that don't show up on the stat sheet," Quinn said. "[That's] what is going to allow those guys to be successful NHL players."

Smith should be with Team USA in the upcoming World Junior Championships.

Quentin Musty has been stellar for the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL. He has eight goals and 11 assists in 12 games.

Last night, Musty was named OHL Performer of the Night. He scored a hat-trick and added two assists.

Musty got into one preseason game with the Sharks, and Quinn said he liked what he saw.

Last night's game was his first after serving a two-game suspension.

Kasper Halttunen was taken No. 36 overall by San Jose and has come out of the gates flying for the London Knights.

Halttunen has 24 points in 23 games, including 15 goals to lead the team.

"I knew he was going to be a goal scorer in that league," Quinn said. "He's a big kid who can shoot, [and] he's got an edge to him too. His skating is something that has to keep getting better, and it will as you get older and your legs get stronger, and your center of gravity gets lower, but I'm not surprised what he's doing in the OHL."

These three prospects and the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft will help propel the Sharks back to playoff contention. It will take some time, but in the long run, these prospects are developing in the right ways to be successful in the NHL.
