While Finland struggled for wins during the preliminary round, Halttunen did his best to keep his team in the tournament. Finland just defeated rival Sweden 5-4 in a shootout this morning off the back of Halttunen's three-point game.
Against the Swedes, the winger had one goal, two assists, and six shots.
Halttunen's shot has been on full display all tournament long. He finished with 20 shots on goal through the four preliminary-round games. He finished with three goals and three assists.
Two of his assists were directly created from his shot. His ability to fire a heavy shot makes it hard for opposing goalies to control the rebound.
This play also saved Finland's tourney. Halttunen used his powerful wrist shot to create a rebound in front while his team had an empty net. Finland tied the game and won in a shootout, enough to get them into the quarter-finals.
The San Jose Sharks have had an issue scoring goals as of late. While he won't be in the NHL this season, as a prospect, the front office should be excited to add a player with this good of a shot in the future.
Halttunen has been scoring at a terrific pace in the OHL with the London Knights. He has 20 goals in 28 games. This is also his first season on the smaller North American-sized ice rink.
The 18-year-old still needs to round out the rest of his game, but with the Sharks desperately needing a pure goalscorer, Halttunen might be the guy to do just that in the future.
