
Draft picks Julius Miettinen and Alexis Bernier collide in a high-stakes semifinal showdown as Everett and Chicoutimi battle for a spot in the prestigious CHL championship final.
The Canadian Hockey League’s Memorial Cup Tournament got underway last weekend in Kelowna, BC with two Kraken prospects competing for the CHL’s highest award. Julius Miettinen and Alexis Bernier, both drafted by the Kraken in 2024, and their respective teams hope to bring the Memorial Cup home.
Julius Miettinen and the Everett Silvertips clinched the Western Hockey League Championship on May 15th, while the Chicoutimi Saguenéens bested the Moncton Wildcats in a 6-game series that led to their first title in thirty-two years.
In Kelowna, the teams met for the first time in round robin play on Many 23rd. Chicoutimi was up 2-1 at the beginning of the second period, when Everett suddenly kicked into gear, putting up three goals including two within a minute. Outshooting the Saguenéens all three periods, Everett took the win 5-3.
The teams have since faced both the OHL Champion Kitchener Rangers and the Kelowna Rockets. Everett ended the round robin with a 2-1 record, and Chicoutimi 1-2. The teams will face each other again today, May 29th for the semifinals. The winner will go on to face the Kitchener Rangers in the Memorial Cup final.
