If the Lightning strike out on Noah Hanifin, this Capitals defenseman could become their top target.

It isn't a secret that the Tampa Bay Lightning's top priority at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline is to add Calgary Flames star defenseman Noah Hanifin. It has been established that his preference is to join the Lightning, and the club is working to bring him in because of it.

However, if the Lightning cannot send the Flames a trade offer to their liking, there is still the possibility that they will miss out on Hanifin. In this scenario, the Lightning would need to work the phones and explore their other options, as they need help on the blue line immensely.

Because of this, in a recent article for The Athletic, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun brought up the prospect of the Lightning making Washington Capitals defenseman Joel Edmundson their "Plan B or Plan C."

Edmundson, 30, may not be a star defenseman, but he is a reliable defensive defenseman who would provide the Lightning's blue line with more stability if acquired. It also does not hurt that he has a Stanley Cup on his resume and plays a very heavy game.

If the Lightning acquired Edmundson, he would be a fit virtually anywhere in their lineup. This is because he can play both the left side and the right side. He also would be an obvious choice for their penalty kill.

In 44 games this season with the Capitals, Edmundson has one goal, five assists, 49 blocks, and 59 hits.
