The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that defenseman John Klingberg is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
On Wednesday, Klingberg was injured in the first period of Toronto's 5-2 pre-season victory against the Buffalo Sabres in St. Thomas, Ontario.
Following the game, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe revealed that "something pulled up" on the 31-year-old that forced him to leave the game and that his removal was precautionary.
The Maple Leafs signed Klingberg to a one-year, $4.15 million contract this summer. The offensively skilled defender started out his camp quarterbacking the top power-play unit alongside forwards Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares. The Swedish defenseman described his first pre-season game with the Leafs earlier in the week as "scrambly" as he settled in with his new club.
In the same announcement, the Leafs announced that William Nylander would not practice on Friday due to flu-like symptoms.
Klingberg split last season with the Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild where he scored 10 goals and added 23 assists in 67 games.
