No. 1 overall pick from the 2026 NHL Draft Gavin McKenna, highlights a massive list of newcomers.
The Toronto Maple Leafs officially released their 2026 training camp roster Wednesday, inviting 73 players to Ford Performance Centre as the club begins a new chapter under general manager John Chayka and head coach Jim Hiller.
The group includes 41 forwards, 25 defencemen and seven goaltenders, the same total the organization brought to camp a year ago, but with a far different look after a summer of trades, free-agent additions and the No. 1 overall selection of Gavin McKenna. On-ice sessions open Thursday. Preseason play begins Saturday with split-squad games against the Montreal Canadiens.
The roster is stacked with NHL veterans, Marlies regulars, recent draft picks and a pair of professional tryouts in forward Matthew Barbolini and defenceman Nick Blankenburg. New faces include McKenna, Sergei Bobrovsky, Jack Roslovic, Nick Paul, Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger, Brandon Duhaime, Zack MacEwen, Emil Andrae and Darren Raddysh. Auston Matthews, William Nylander and John Tavares headline the forwards. Jake McCabe, Morgan Rielly, Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson remain the core of the blue line.
Camp, however, will open without several key pieces.
Chayka confirmed Max Domi failed his physical and will be out indefinitely after complications from offseason surgery on an injury he played through last season. Domi, who posted 12 goals and 36 points in 80 games, is expected to land on long-term injured reserve, which would give Toronto cap relief on his $3.75 million hit as the club tries to get under the ceiling. Chayka said Domi will address the situation himself “in the near future.”
Rielly arrived with what Chayka called a “viral condition.” The veteran defenceman is expected to miss portions of camp and possibly the first preseason game, but the general manager downplayed long-term concerns and said Rielly should be ready for opening night.
Two prospects on the defence list will miss significant time. William Villeneuve, who had climbed the Marlies depth chart, is out long term after ACL reconstruction. Cade Webber, the 6-foot-6 shutdown defenceman acquired from Carolina in 2024, underwent elbow reconstruction and is month-to-month.
There was better news on Chris Tanev. Limited to 11 games last season after core-muscle surgery in March, the 36-year-old has been fully cleared.
“He pushed himself as hard as anybody in the gym and on the ice,” Chayka said. “I feel really confident that his injuries are in a good place. He’s as healthy as anybody.” Matthews, coming off a late-season MCL tear, is also 100 percent and “full-go,” according to the GM.
The seven-man goaltending group is led by Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz, with Artur Akhtyamov, Samuel Hlavaj and others providing organizational depth. Among the 41 forwards are high-end prospects such as Easton Cowan, Luke Haymes and several 2025 and 2026 draft picks who will compete for looks in a shortened preseason.
