The Toronto Maple Leafs have begun the process of talking to head coaching candidates with one of the top names in Toronto over the weekend.
It sounds like the Toronto Maple Leafs' head coaching search is well underway.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Maple Leafs are believed to have met with Craig Berube on Saturday.
The internet was abuzz when a video surfaced of what appeared to be Todd McLellan waiting in front of a boarding gate at Los Angeles International Airport over the weekend.
“We all assume he's interviewing Monday," Friedman said on the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast. "We'll see if this goes any deeper.".
Berube and McLellan have been identified as frontrunners for the Maple Leafs' head coaching position after the club parted ways with Sheldon Keefe last week.
Keefe has already been reportedly granted permission by Toronto to speak to the New Jersey Devils to speak with them about their head coaching position,
But it appears the Devils won't be the only ones interested in the former Leafs coach.
“I had some people saying to me this weekend that they think that Sheldon Keefe is a big factor in this job and that Keefe has a legit chance at this if he wants it,' Friedman said about the Devils' vacancy. "I do believe there have been a few teams, more than one, that have reached out to either ask the Leafs for permission to talk to him or gauge his interest. He is a legit person of interest in this year's coaching searches.”
Keefe is under contract with Toronto for the next two years, so he has the luxury of waiting things out if he chooses to do so. Berube is also a candidate for the Devils' coaching spot.
