Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving said earlier this month that the goal remains to get Nylander signed.
Although no contract has been signed, the Maple Leafs and William Nylander's camp continue to hammer away at a contract extension.
During Thursday's edition of TSN's Insider Trading, Chris Johnston gave an update on the negotiations, going as far as saying both sides are on the same page "on a number of fronts."
"They're certainly working away at it and I think that's maybe why there is no worry. At this point in time, it does seem as though the Leafs and William Nylander's camp are on the same page on a number of fronts," Johnston said.
"For one, neither of them want to talk about this much publicly. Obviously they're keeping a lid on the negotiations as much as they can. But secondly, I think that one thing that remains unchanged is that William Nylander absolutely wants to be a Maple Leaf long-term. It's still his goal and his camp's goal to get a deal done.
"The Leafs want to sign a player that's had a tremendous season for them so far this year, and so, the fact that the talks remain — that there does seem to be some optimism there — I think is a positive sign as we look towards a new year when they'll try to get a deal done."
The Maple Leafs and Nylander's camp have been in constant communication amid the 27-year-old's historic season. While there have been reports that Nylander's price has gone up, Toronto GM Brad Treliving says he's impressed by how the 27-year-old can block things out.
"I think Willy's handled it tremendously. It goes to show, I think he's got the ability to just block things out and just focus at the task at hand and he's had a heck of a start to the season, so I don't think it's affected him," Treliving said on OverDrive on Dec. 6.
Nylander has 41 points (15 goals, 26 assists) in 29 games this season. Earlier this year, he broke the Maple Leafs' record for the longest point streak to start a season, which lasted 17 games.
The 27-year-old forward is in the final year of a six-year, $45 million contract he signed in Dec. 2018 and will become a free agent on July 1, if a deal isn't reached before then.
